Safety Around Water

During National Water Safety Month The Quincy Family YMCA, Quincy Park District, Sheridan Swim Club and Jackson-Lincoln Swimming Complex have partnered together to bring a water safety initiative to our community. The Safety Around Water Program is a free program designed to engage and educate youth about the importance of water safety skills and provide more of America’s youth access to water safety lessons.

Through Safety Around Water, parents and caregivers are encouraged to help their children learn fundamental water safety and swimming skills. During the course, children will learn how to respond if they find themselves in unexpected water situations — from how to reach the water’s surface if they submerge to safely reaching a pool’s edge or exiting any body of water.

To help achieve its goal to make children more aware of water safety, the Quincy Family YMCA will be visiting all 1st grade classrooms in the Quincy Public School District during the week of April 30. This will be a 30 minute class introduction to water safety going over rules, fun water facts and activities incorporating safety to prepare children for the water safety class offered to them as part of the program. Children will then be invited to take part in a FREE water safety class at any of our partner organization pools on June 6th.
